King orders opening of Phase I of Grand Mosque expansion project

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz ordered the opening of Phase I of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques’ Holy Grand Mosque expansion project today. The renovations encompass the ground floor, the first floor, the first and second mezzanines, and the northern, southern, and western yards of the Grand Mosque complex. They will increase the capacity of the facility by 450,000, allowing 1.6 million people to worship at once. The project is slated for completion in ten months, by Ramadan (June/July) of next year.

King Abdullah also ordered the opening of Phase I of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques’ project to upgrade the capacity of the Mataf (circumambulation around the Kaaba area). It will allow for a capacity of 20,000 perambulators per hour in the nave area, 5,000 on the ground floor, 15,000 on the first floor, 30,000 on the rooftop, and 2,000 in the temporary Mataf area.
