September 3, 2009

The Foreign Ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states concluded the 112th session of the Ministerial Council in Jeddah on Tuesday evening. The delegation of Saudi Arabia was headed by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr. Nizar Madani.

In its concluding statement, the Council reaffirmed its support for the call made by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz at the Arab Economic Summit held in Kuwait for inter-Arab reconciliation. It commended the pre-emptive security measures undertaken by Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Kuwait to detect and thwart terrorist plots. The Council strongly condemned last week’s attempt on the life of Assistant Interior Minister for Security Affairs Prince Muhammad bin Nayef bin Abdulaziz by a suicide bomber, stressing that terrorist acts will not succeed in destabilizing the Kingdom or threatening its security, peace and stability.

Commenting on the Palestinian issue and the Middle East peace process, the Council praised the content of the message addressed by King Abdullah to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on the occasion of Fatah’s 6th Conference held in Bethlehem, in which the Saudi monarch stressed the importance of Palestinian unity.
