Crown Prince Sultan chairs Cabinet session

Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz chaired the Cabinet session at Al-Salam Palace in Jeddah today. He began by wishing the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz all the best during his current travels abroad, during which he will visit Canada, the United States, Morocco and France. The Crown Prince updated the Cabinet on the King’s latest contacts with foreign officials, including a message he sent to Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani and telephone calls he received from Sudanese President Omar Hassan Al-Bashir, Malaysian Prime Minister Mohamed Najib bin Abdul Razak and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

The Cabinet listened to a number of reports on regional and international developments, praising the adoption of a joint work program by the European Union (EU)-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Joint Ministerial Council during its meeting in Luxembourg.

On the domestic front, the Cabinet reviewed the scientific, cultural and economic activities that took place in the Kingdom over the past few days. The ministers highlighted King Abdullah’s inauguration of the first Saudi-manufactured car, the Ghazal 1, which was designed by students at King Saud University (KSU). They also commended the signing of contracts for a housing project in Jazan, which will involve the construction of 6,000 residential units, 31 mosques, 35 schools and five health centers, in addition to roads, sidewalks, parks, electricity and water services and sanitation.

Turning to its agenda, the Cabinet set a fine of 200 riyals for smoking in the Kingdom’s airports; authorized the Interior Minister to sign a draft cooperation agreement with South Africa on extradition; approved an amendment to the wording of paragraph (2/a) of item (second) of Article (II) of the Military Orders issued by Royal Decree No. (M/47); and issued an interpretation of the text of paragraph (h) of item (I) of Article (fifth) of the Military Pension Regulation issued by Royal Decree No. (M/24).

The Cabinet approved the appointments of Osama Majid Qabbani, Rashid Al-Hameid, Abdullah Ahmad Alfozan, Rashid Ibrahim Almqit and Abdul Abdulaziz Al-Fayez to the Board of Directors of the Social Charity Fund for a period of four years. The Cabinet also approved the appointment of Abdul Rahman Alehizan as Director General of Water in Riyadh at the Ministry of Water and Electricity (15th rank).
