Ministry of Justice considering mandatory pro bono legal service

The Justice Ministry is planning to make it obligatory for lawyers to provide free legal services to low-income members of the public, the Saudi Gazette reported on June 16. The daily newspaper, citing official sources, said the Ministry of Justice has already finished a special statute setting up this service. Under the program, each lawyer is required to provide pro bono services to a minimum of nine indigent clients every year. According to sources cited by Saudi Gazette, the program is modeled aft the European Union pro bono service.
