May 21, 2008

Saudi Arabia has welcomed an agreement to end the political crisis in Lebanon.

The accord, signed in Doha today, is the result of crisis talks that began after an escalation of violence in Lebanon. As part of the agreement, the Lebanese parliament will meet Sunday to elect Gen. Michel Suleiman president.

In a statement, Saudi Ambassador to Lebanon Dr. Abdulaziz Khoja stressed the Kingdom’s support for the accord and expressed the hope that peace and prosperity would return to Lebanon.

Also today, Secretary-General Abdulrahman Al-Attiyah of the Riyadh-based Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) lauded the agreement and noted that it represents great success for Arab and Gulf diplomacy. GCC nations will continue to support Lebanon, he added.
