Kingdom commits $300 million to OPEC Environmental Fund

May 13, 2012

Saudi Arabia has pioneered efforts to achieve sustainable development at the national level in order to preserve the environment, declared Prince Turki bin Saud bin Mohammed, Deputy President of the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST), during a speech at the Saudi International Conference for Environmental Technology. Prince Turki cited the proposal of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz for the establishment of the OPEC Fund for Studying Environmental Impacts – for which the Kingdom has contributed $300 million – as evidence of the Saudi government’s commitment. He also described KACST’s contributions to the field of environmental technology.

The three day event, which was organized by KACST and patronized by King Abdullah, began in Riyadh today. The Conference participants are scheduled to discuss a number of issues, including environmental waste, soil contamination, air quality, climate change and a series of proposed solutions.
