Evacuation of Saudi citizens in Lebanon underway

May 9, 2008

The Saudi Embassy in Beirut has begun evacuating its nationals from Lebanese territories due to the deteriorating security situation, Asharq Al-Awsat reported today.

In a telephone interview with Asharq Al-Awsat, Saudi Ambassador to Lebanon Dr. Abdulaziz Khojah described the situation there as “bad.” He said that the Embassy has evacuated more than 70 Saudi nationals to Syria since yesterday, with more expected over the next few days.

When the tensions erupted in Lebanon, the Embassy sent short messages (SMS) to Saudi citizens on their cell phones urging them to leave Lebanon with the help of the Embassy, Khojah said. Once they arrive in Syria, the Saudi Embassy in Damascus is facilitating their return to the Kingdom, he added.

Earlier today, Khojah issued a statement that all Saudi citizens in Lebanon are safe and unharmed.
