GCC Joint Defense Council discusses Peninsula Shield expansion

Defense ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Joint Defense Council met in Doha, Qatar today to discuss expanding the Peninsula Shield.
Saudi Arabia’s delegation to the meeting was led by Prince Abdulrahman bin Abdulaziz, Deputy Minister of Defense and Aviation and Inspector General.
The Peninsula Shield was established in 1986 as a GCC multi-member defense force with about 5,000 soldiers headquartered at a Saudi army base in Hafr Al-Batin. Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz has proposed expanding the Shield.
