King Abdullah chairs Cabinet session

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz chaired the Cabinet’s weekly meeting in Riyadh today, during which he briefed the ministers on his latest consultations with foreign leaders, including his meeting in Khobar last week with King Abdullah II of Jordan. The Saudi monarch also met with Special Advisor to the U.S. Secretary of State Dennis Ross and Australian Foreign Minister Steven Smith, and received messages from the leaders of Kuwait, Bahrain, Libya, Yemen and the U.A.E.

After reviewing reports on the threat of swine flu, King Abdullah ordered a further increase in precautionary measures to prevent the disease from appearing in the Kingdom. Minister of Health Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah briefed the Cabinet on the efforts made by his ministry to organize a GCC conference on the issue, which will include experts from the World Health Organization (WHO). He noted that the Executive Bureau of the Council of Arab Health Ministers will meet in Riyadh Tuesday.

On the domestic front, the Cabinet praised King Abdullah’s trip to Eastern Province last week. The ministers stressed that the King’s commissioning of several new projects in the region reflects the strength of the Saudi economy, despite the global financial crisis.

In addition, the Cabinet approved the re-formation of the Council of Military Service; approved the Kingdom’s increased contribution to the subscribed capital of the Islamic Development Bank, in the amount of 23,649 additional shares valued at 10,000 Islamic dinars per share; approved the Kingdom’s accession to the International Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Co-Operation, 1990; and approved the final account of the Saudi Railways Organization for FY 1427/1428 H.

The Cabinet approved the appointment of Osamah Nuqali as Ambassador (15th rank) at the Foreign Ministry; Prince Abdulrahman Al Miqrin as Assistant Head of the Experts’ Commission (15th rank) at the Council of Ministers; Mojahid Wahbi as Minister Plenipotentiary at the Foreign Ministry; Dr. Talal Yosif as Director General of Private Education (14th rank) at the Ministry of Higher Education; Abdullah Albosayes as Director General of the President’s Office (14th rank) at the Court of Grievances; and Fahd Alisa as Legal Expert B (14th rank) at the Experts’ Commission at the Council of Ministers.
