Arab Foreign Ministers agree on draft resolution on Syria

March 28, 2012

The Foreign Ministers of the Arab League held a closed-door meeting in Baghdad today, in preparation for the Arab Summit that begins on Thursday. During their deliberations, the ministers agreed upon a draft resolution addressing the crisis in Syria. This announcement was made by Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari during a joint press conference with Assistant Secretary General of the Arab League Ahmed bin Hali.

Zebari stated that the draft resolution is based upon previous Arab resolutions, but updated to reflect the recent developments – particularly the visit of the joint U.N.-AL envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan, and the Syrian government’s acceptance of his six-point plan.

The Foreign Ministers discussed several other topics during their session, including the situations in Palestine and Somalia; the formulation of an Arab counterterrorism strategy; restructuring the Arab League; and mechanisms for making the Middle East a weapons of mass destruction-free zone.
