Saudi Arabia and Algeria sign agreement on political cooperation

March 18, 2008

Minister of Foreign Affairs Prince Saud Al-Faisal paid an official visit to Algeria today.

In remarks to reporters upon his arrival in Algiers, Prince Saud said that the visit is an opportunity to review Arab, Muslim and bilateral issues.

The prince said that he will confer with President Abdulaziz Bouteflika on the political crisis in Lebanon, and expressed the hope that the upcoming Arab summit in Damascus will focus on Lebanon. Failure to resolve the crisis in Lebanon threatens to negatively impact Lebanon’s unity, Prince Saud warned.

Today, Prince Saud and Algerian Foreign Affairs Minister Morad Madlasi signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a mechanism for political cooperation between their respective foreign ministries.

Prince Saud said that he and Madlasi discussed ways to boost counterterrorism cooperation between the two countries. The Saudi foreign minister also met with Prime Minister Abdulaziz Belkhadem.
