Saudi Embassy in Chad evacuated and closed

February 5, 2008

The staff of the Saudi Embassy in Chad and their families have been evacuated and the mission closed, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today.

Armed clashes erupted in the capital city of N’Djamena last week between the Chadian government and rebel forces.

On February 2, a bomb hit the residence of the Saudi ambassador to Chad, where embassy staff and their families had gathered in preparation for evacuation. The wife and daughter of one of the embassy’s staff were killed, and two additional children were injured.

The Ministry said that the evacuees are on their way to Saudi Arabia aboard a special plane, and that a medical evacuation plane is bringing the bodies back to the Kingdom. Both planes are expected to arrive at Riyadh Air Base this evening.
