Annual report shows increase in Saudi port activity

The Saudi Ports Authority has issued its annual report on operations. According to the latest statistics, the total tonnage handled in all Saudi ports during the first nine months of 2008 reached around 114.7 million tons (mt), showing an increase of 10.19 percent over the same period in 2007.

 

Jeddah Port registered the biggest hike (10.5 percent) and accounted for the biggest share of cargo (34.6 mt).

King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam came in second among commercial ports in terms of volume (17.6 mt) with a 15.31 percent growth rate.

King Fahd Industrial Ports in Jubail and Yanbu handled 31.1 mt and 25.7 mt, respectively.

The total number of containers handled increased by 10.92 percent. By the end of September 2008, Saudi ports had handled around 3.45 million units.
