Prince Saud Al-Faisal says GCC will fund Palestinian reconstruction

January 16, 2009

Following an extraordinary summit in Riyadh yesterday, Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal announced that the leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) discussed ways of providing financial support for Palestinians in Gaza. He predicted that generous amounts will soon be donated for the reconstruction effort.

Prince Saud affirmed that the Arab initiative – an offer to normalize relations with Israel in return for a just settlement with the Palestinians – is still on the table.

However, he noted, Israel “fails and procrastinates accepting it. It does not want to agree because it does not want peace. It wants to gain land.”

Nonetheless, said Prince Saud, the offer will not be withdrawn. “The Arab initiative has enabled the Arab states to penetrate the ranks of Israel’s supporters in Europe and the Western world, and has become a pressuring factor on Israel,” he explained.
