Kingdom donates $3 million in food aid to Afghanistan

September 29, 2008

Saudi Arabia has donated $3 million in food baskets to Afghanistan, which is suffering from a severe food shortage. The baskets will be distributed in cooperation with the World Food Program.

The Kingdom’s donation is in response to a joint appeal issued by the government of Afghanistan and the United Nations to provide food aid in light of the hike in global food prices, the lack of production and widespread drought.

The aid is in line with Saudi Arabia’s ongoing assistance to Afghanistan. In June 2008, the Kingdom donated 300 tons of relief aid to Afghanistan, including 12,000 boxes of foodstuffs; 1,000 tents; 3,000 blankets; and 1,000 rugs.
