September 24, 2008

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) foreign ministers met with Rio Group foreign ministers and the European Union Troika in New York yesterday.

Saudi Arabia was represented at the meetings by Minister of Foreign Affairs Prince Saud Al-Faisal, who is currently in New York as head of the Saudi delegation to the 63rd UN General Assembly.

During the meetings, Prince Saud discussed implementing the recommendations of the World Conference on Dialogue. The conference was held this past July in Madrid, Spain on the initiative of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz.

Prince Saud said that the recommendations of the Madrid conference responded to a real need to find solutions to a range of global problems including violence, extremism, intolerance, the disintegration of the family and the spread of drugs. He expressed the hope that the UN General Assembly would hold a special session to discuss the recommendations of the conference.

The Rio Group is a 21-member international organization of Latin American and Caribbean states. The Troika represents the European Union in external relations.
