Crown Prince chairs Cabinet session (7/1/13)

Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz chaired the weekly Cabinet meeting at Al-Salam Palace in Jeddah this afternoon. The Council of Ministers began by reviewing a number of reports related to domestic and international developments. It congratulated Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani on his assumption of power and wished progress and prosperity for Qatar and its people.
Next, the Cabinet discussed the situation in Syria, observing that an illegitimate regime, assisted by foreign forces, is committing genocide against the Syrian people, in defiance of international laws and norms. It expressed concern that Syria has been made vulnerable to sectarian conflict and called upon the international community to move quickly to help the Syrians defend themselves. The Cabinet reiterated the Kingdom’s demand for the immediate implementation of the European Union’s decision to lift the ban on arming the Syrian opposition and called for a prohibition on arming the forces of the Assad regime.
Turning to domestic affairs, the ministers discussed a number of topics, particularly the preparations by various sectors for the holy month of Ramadan. They reviewed the plans and procedures created to maintain the safety of worshippers, as well as the expansion of the Grand Mosque.
Addressing its remaining agenda items, the Cabinet approved the organizing of the General Organization for Military Industries; approved the participation of the Ministry of Interior, represented by the General Directorate of Traffic, in the Preparatory Committee for the Follow-Up Implementation of the Public Transport Project in Jeddah; approved the adoption of the final account of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities for fiscal year 1432/1433 H.; and authorized the Secretary General of the Saudi Commission for Wildlife to sign a draft memorandum of understanding with the General Authority for the Protection of Marine Resources, Environment and Wildlife in Bahrain.
The Cabinet approved the appointments of Saad Al-Audan as Adviser on Military Works at the Presidency of the General Staff of the Ministry of Defense (15th rank); Dr. Ahmed Al-Aqil as Ambassador at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Saleh Amogheileith as Undersecretary for Information Affairs at the Ministry of Culture and Information (15th rank); Khalid Sultan as Minister Plenipotentiary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Mansour Al-Mzmoomi as Minister Plenipotentiary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and Ibrahim Al-Swaid as General Manager of Purchases at the Ministry of the Interior (14th rank).
