54.3 million mobile subscriptions at the end of first quarter

June 23, 2012

The total number of mobile subscriptions grew to around 54.3 million at the end of first quarter of 2012, with a penetration rate of 188.5%, the Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) reported today.  Despite the high growth rates, growth is expected to continue albeit at a slower pace, CITC reported.

The estimated number of Internet users in Saudi Arabia has also seen dramatic increase, with Internet penetration reaching 49.1% of population or 14.2 million users by the end March.  CITC expects that demand for Internet services will increase significantly in the next few years driven by the rapid growth of handheld smart devices and applications.
