June 8, 2009

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz chaired the Cabinet meeting in Riyadh today, during which he briefed the ministers on his meeting last week with U.S. President Barack Obama. The main topics of their discussion, he said, were Saudi-U.S. relations, the Palestinian situation, and other regional issues. King Abdullah declared that a new phase in U.S. history has begun that will lay the foundation for more positive relations between the U.S. and the Arab and Muslim worlds.

The Cabinet regarded President Obama’s speech in Cairo, directed at the Muslim world, as a signal that a new environment exists that will allow for constructive and effective dialogue between civilizations. This engagement, in turn, will contribute towards solving regional and international crises.

Turning to other issues, the Cabinet expressed happiness over the successful elections in Lebanon, which will hopefully lead to a more secure, stable and prosperous nation. The Cabinet also commended the signing of a Monetary Union Agreement by Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) foreign ministers on Sunday.

On the domestic front, Deputy Prime Minister Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz offered a report on the Kingdom’s latest successes in foiling attempts by drug smugglers to bring narcotics into the Kingdom.

After reviewing its agenda items, the Cabinet authorized the Minster of Higher Education to negotiate a draft memorandum of scientific and educational cooperation with Turkmenistan; authorized the Governor of the General Organization of Social Insurance to discuss a draft memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the field of social insurance with its Yemeni counterpart; and approved the memberships of Dr. Khalid Al-Ghonaim and Ahmad Ala’Olaqi on the board of directors of the Saline Water Conversion Corporation for three years starting 2/9/1430H.

The Cabinet also approved the appointment of Abdulwahab Al-Babteen to the position of Administrative Advisor (Rank 15) at the National Guard; Ali Al-Sodais to the position of Assistant Undersecretary of the Western Sector (Rank 14) at the National Guard; and Saad Al-Zaid to the position of Director General of Administrative and Financial Affairs (Rank 14) at the General Presidency of Scholarly Research and Ifta.
