King Abdullah chairs Cabinet session (5/21/12)

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz began the Cabinet meeting at Al-Salam Palace in Jeddah today by expressing thanks to the leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states who took part in the 14th Annual GCC Summit held on May 14 in Riyadh. He thanked God Almighty for the security, stability and prosperity enjoyed by the GCC states and hoped for steady progress and cooperation.

Then, King Abdullah briefed the Cabinet on his latest talks with foreign officials, including messages he received from Spanish King Juan Carlos, Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani and Yemeni President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi; a telephone call he received from Jordan’s King Abdullah II; and the audiences he held for President Yusufu Mamadou of Niger and Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh.

The Cabinet congratulated King Abdullah on the 7th anniversary of his ascension to the throne. In response, the King advised all people to thank God Almighty for the blessings bestowed upon the Saudi state and to work towards future progress.

Turning to regional developments, the Cabinet lauded the constitutional amendments recently issued by the King of Bahrain and supported by the country’s two legislative chambers, a step that will enhance the parliamentary and political life of the people of Bahrain.

On the domestic front, the Cabinet reviewed the early preparations already underway for this year’s Hajj season. King Abdullah praised the efforts exerted by the Hajj Higher Committee, led by Crown Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz, and urged a doubling of efforts to serve the pilgrims.

Addressing its remaining agenda items, the Cabinet authorized the Crown Prince to sign a draft security cooperation arrangement with Comoros and a draft agreement with South Africa regarding the exchange of legal assistance in criminal issues; approved a number of measures to develop a comprehensive database on home ownership in the Kingdom; approved a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in health fields between the Saudi Ministry of Health and the Swedish Ministry of Health and Social Affairs; and issued a set of instructions aimed at improving media coverage of government bodies.

The Cabinet approved the appointments of Saleh Al-Mahanna as Financial Advisor at the Ministry of Finance (15th rank); Abdulrahman Al-Dawood as Administrative Advisor at the Supreme Council of the Judiciary (15th rank); Mohammed Al-Hijri as Assistant Undersecretary at the Baha Governorate (14th rank); Saud Al-Obaisi as Mayor of Northern Borders at the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs (14th rank); Saleh Jeblawi as Director General of Water in Madinah Province at the Ministry of Water and Electricity (14th rank); Saad Al-Qethami as Director of General Administration for Auditing Companies and Institutions’ Accounts at the General Auditing Bureau (14th rank); and Abdullah Al-Saif as Director General of Administrative and Financial Affairs at the Ministry of Civil Service (14th rank).
