King Abdullah chairs Cabinet session (3/28/11)

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz began the Cabinet session in Riyadh today by welcoming the body’s newest member, Minister of Housing Dr. Shuwaish bin Saudi Al-Duwaihi. Then, the King offered a briefing on his contacts last week with foreign leaders, including messages he sent to Russian President Dmitri Medvedev; Malaysian Prime Minister Mohamed Najib bin Abdulrazak; and Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Egyptian Armed Forces Field Marshall Mohammed Hussein Tantawi, as well as telephone calls he made to Bahraini King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa; Lebanese President Michel Suleiman; and Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad.
After listening to a number of reports on developments in the Arab world, the Cabinet stressed the importance of coordinated Arab action and concerted international efforts to ensure the unity and stability of Arab countries, stem the bloodshed, and maintain the security of people and property.
The Cabinet also reviewed the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, strongly condemning Israel for bombing residential areas in the Gaza Strip and expanding settlements. The ministers called on the international community, especially the U.N. Security Council, to take immediate action against these serious violations, protect unarmed civilians, and force Israel to respect the relevant international laws.
Addressing its weekly agenda items, the Cabinet approved recommendations on codifying the moral content of information technology in the Kingdom; approved a memorandum of understanding on strategic dialogue between the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states and China; approved a memorandum of cooperation in the field of higher education between the Saudi Ministry of Higher Education and the Australian Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations; approved the amendment of an agreement to form a joint committee between the Kingdom and Syria; and authorized the President of the King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (KACARE) to sign a draft agreement on cooperation in the field of peaceful uses of nuclear energy with Argentina.
The Cabinet approved a number of appointments, including the appointment of Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Makhdhoub as Undersecretary of the Ministry for Rights Affairs at the Ministry of Interior (15th rank).
