Saudi Arabia has denied reports that it supports the return of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his family to Pakistan.

In a statement yesterday, a Saudi official source said that there is no truth to the reports, which appeared in the Pakistani media. The Kingdom took in Sharif after his 1999 ouster as a humanitarian gesture with the goodwill of the Pakistani government and President Pervez Musharraf, the official said.

Saudi Arabia also called on Sharif to honor his promise not to return to Pakistan and to politics.
