A meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) foreign ministers began in Riyadh today. In remarks before the meeting, Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs commented on several regional issues.

He called for a Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction, and said that the countries in the region should work together to persuade Iran to respond positively to international demands.

On Iraq, Prince Saud advocated the formation of a national unity government that includes all Iraqi factions and that leads to stability, security and prosperity in the country.

Turning to the Palestinian situation, Prince Saud called on the international community to continue its support for the Palestinian people according to previous resolutions, and urged all parties to work towards peace within the framework of the Arab Initiative for Peace and the road map.
