Foreign Minister comments on Iran, Iraq

Minister of Foreign Affairs Prince Saud Al-Faisal held a joint press conference with German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier today. They commented on a number of issues, including nuclear proliferation in the region, the situation in Iraq and the Middle East peace process.

On Iran, Prince Saud said that the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries are concerned with the developments there, and that they would dispatch a delegation to Iran. Asked if Saudi Arabia supports direct talks between the US and Iran, Prince Saud replied, “It is not my business to either support or oppose such a development, but we hope a diplomatic solution will be reached in this respect.”

Turning to Iraq, Prince Saud said that he hoped the new Iraqi government would ensure law and order in the country.

On the Palestinian situation, Steinmeier underscored the importance of moving forward with the peace process. He said that the EU countries hope that the new Palestinian government will renounce violence and respect previous agreements.

Steinmeier also met today with Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Ali Al-Naimi today.
