Chairman of the GCC Interconnection Authority Dr. Saleh Al-Awaji has confirmed that work on the power grid project will start in September this year. The grid, to be carried out in three phases, will by the year 2010 link the six member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council: Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and the United Arab Emirates. Tenders for the first phase, costed at around U.S. $1.2 billion, are scheduled to open in April and May.
