Saudi Telecom granted 3G mobile license

The Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) has granted a new 3G mobile license to the Saudi Telecommunications Company (STC) for a fee of SR 753.7 million [US $ 201 million].  "We are very happy to hand over the 3G license to STC after evaluating their application," said Mohammed Ibrahim Al-Suwail, CITC's governor.  "We expect STC to offer 3G services to the public within the next 18 months."

With the upgrade to 3G, and the required purchase of the 3G-enabled handsets that are coming on the market, customers will be able to enjoy functions on their mobile phones that used to be available only on a desktop computer, as well as higher transmission speeds.
