2004 News Story 01/23/2004 Profiles released of King Faisal prize winners
Profiles, and full details of the award-winning researches, are available on the website of the King Faisal Foundation, for the prize winners of the 1998 international competitions. Their names were announced on January 8, 1998, and are listed below.
For Service to Islam, the prize went to HE President Abdou Diouf of Senegal.
For Islamic Studies, on the topic of libraries, or the evolution of Islamic publishing, the award went jointly to Professor Yahya Mahmud Ibn Junaid of Saudi Arabia and Professor Abd as-Sattar A. Al-Halwaji of Egypt.
For Medicine, two researchers from the United States specializing in control of communicable diseases were honored: Professor John Louis Gerin and Professor Robert Harry Purcell.
For Science, specifically in the field of mathematics, the prize was awarded to Professor Andrew John Wiles of the United Kingdom.
The prize for Arabic literature, on the topic of autobiographies by contemporary Arab writers, was not awarded, since no work of sufficient merit was submitted.
