Saudi Arabia addresses UN on environmental damage caused by 1991 Gulf War

Addressing the Governing Council of the United Nations in Geneva today, head of the Meteorology and Environment Protection Agency (MEPA) Prince Turki bin Nassir bin Abdulaziz spoke of the extensive environmental damage suffered by Saudi Arabia during the 1991 Gulf War, which led to destruction of ecological systems and natural resources. Unless this damage is repaired and measures of rehabilitation taken, he said, future generations will be threatened. Prince Turki, seeking to clarify the Saudi view, conveyed the Kingdom's request to be given priority in compensations for the damage as testified by UN experts.
