Plans are under way to set up an elevated electric railway in Madinah to facilitate mass transit of pilgrims and visitors between the Prophet's Mosque, the Quba Mosque and the Shuhada district. The project, designed to transport 20,000 passengers an hour, will be ready by 2007.

Project Manager Ayman Hassoun explained that the train will move on a seven-meter-high railroad running for about six miles from Quba past the Prophet's Mosque and Al-Saif Commercial Center to end at Shuhada. The project is viable, since around five million pilgrims visit Madinah every year, for Umrah (the lesser pilgrimage) as well as Hajj.
