[Washington, DC] -- Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal has announced King Fahd's approval for the establishment of an
independent human rights committee in Saudi Arabia.
Prince Saud told a press conference in Riyadh on Tuesday that the committee is in the final stages of its formation. Its mandate will be to implement the rights enshrined in the Kingdom's Basic Law of Governance, and to ensure that human rights are protected. The committee will have administrative, legal and financial independence to ensure that it can effectively conduct its mission to protect and promote human rights in the Kingdom.
Prince Saud added that the idea for the establishment of an independent, non-governmental human rights committee in Saudi Arabia came from Saudi citizens, and that it is part of the reform measures the Kingdom is implementing to promote the welfare of its citizens in all areas.
