Cabinet meeting

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd bin Abdulaziz today chaired the regular weekly meeting of the Council of Ministers, and briefed the cabinet on his talks yesterday with visiting Crown Prince of Bahrain and Commander of the Bahraini Defense Force Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, and of other consultations with a number of brotherly and friendly countries dealing with current developments, notably in the issues of Iraq and Palestine.

King Fahd stressed the need for security and civic stability in Iraq's cities, pointing out that Iraqi citizens have the qualifications and expertise to operate basic services and run day-to-day affairs, and that this will not only provide stability but an appropriate basis for future arrangements aimed at forming an interim government in preparation for the establishment of a constitutional Iraqi government to represent the Iraqi people and preserve their national unity and territorial integrity within the framework of their sovereignty and independence.
Concerning the occupied Palestinian territories and the suffering of the Palestinian people, King Fahd declared that Israel's incessant aggression is clear evidence of its unwillingness to achieve peace, and its obstruction of any peace plan. The cabinet nevertheless expressed the hope that the official publication of the 'road map' will be the real start of a way leading to a comprehensive and just peace in the region as outlined in the Arab peace initiative approved at the Beirut Summit. The cabinet again called on the international community to put pressure on Israel to stop its escalating policies against the Palestinian people and the violation of their territories.
Turning to domestic issues, the cabinet passed a number of resolutions, including authorization for the Minister of Foreign Affairs or his deputy to sign a draft general agreement on cooperation with the Republic of Bulgaria; authorization for the Minister of Higher Education or his deputy to discuss a draft agreement on scientific and cultural cooperation with the Malaysian Federation; and endorsement of the agreement on maritime transport cooperation with the Kingdom of Morocco.
