Foot and mouth disease in the Kingdom

The Department of Animal Resources at the Ministry of Agriculture and Water today reported 67 occurrences of foot-and-mouth disease, in Eastern Province as well as the Provinces of Riyadh, Qassim, Madinah, Makkah, Hail, and Northern Borders. In a weekly statement, the department said that since the appearance of the disease the total number of infected animals stands at 3,618 head, comprising 2,933 cattle and 685 sheep and goats. Of these, 326 have died, comprising 156 cattle and 170 sheep and goats. The situation, however, is stable and under control in over 80 percent of the disease-afflicted areas. A number of infected animals have in fact recovered and no new cases have emerged.
