Palestinain intifada conference opens in Tehran

Chairman of the Consultative Council (Majlis Al-Shura) Sheikh Muhammad bin Jubair is in Tehran at the head of the Saudi delegation to the Second International Conference in Support of the Palestinian Intifada. In his speech today, Sheikh bin Jubair declared that the Kingdom had given the highest priority to the Palestinian cause, extending since the earliest days both material and moral support, and sparing no effort in advocating the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and the establishment of their own state with Al-Quds [Jerusalem] as its capital. Direct government aid, he said, has over the years amounted to SR 6.88 billion [U.S. $1.83 billion] while remittances from the people's committee for assisting the Palestinian mujahadeen have reached SR 1.71 billion [$0.45 billion]. In addition, during the Al-Quds Intifada campaign in Riyadh Province, donations were collected amounting to SR 208.14 million [$55.5 million]. Reiterating that Saudi Arabia views assistance to the Palestinians as a duty, he urged the Muslim World to be unstinting in extending moral and material support to the Palestinian cause.
