Royal Decree appoints head of new tourism commission

A Royal Decree today appointed Prince Sultan bin Salman bin Abdulaziz as Secretary-General of the Supreme Commission for Tourism, with the rank of Minister.

Prince Sultan is renowned for being the first Muslim astronaut, having traveled into space in 1985 as payload specialist aboard the U.S. space shuttle 'Discovery'. Born in Riyadh in 1956, he obtained a BA in Communications and Aviation from the USA before joining the Ministry of Information in 1982. From 1985 to 1996 he served in the Saudi Royal Air Force, retiring as Colonel. He has given support to a number of specialized institutions and charitable organizations that focus on the environment and cultural heritage, and in 1999 set up a prize for traditional architecture.
