Telecommunications officials in the member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) have agreed to link their Internet systems directly with the Internet hub of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This offers several advantages, including fast access to information, and solidarity in protection against undesirable web sites. Kuwait and Qatar have already set up this link.
At their recent meeting in Doha, the GCC officials also agreed on treating international mobile telephone roaming by GCC nationals as the same as domestic mobile phone calls. In addition, they called on member states that have not yet linked their automated teller machines (ATMs) with those of the other states to do so as soon as possible, and discussed ways of implementing caller identification service among GCC states through the GSM network.
