Independent ID cards to be issued to Saudi women

At a press conference in Jeddah following a meeting with students from Makkah Province yesterday, Deputy Interior Minister Prince Ahmed Bin Abdul Aziz confirmed that measures are currently under way to issue independent identification cards for Saudi women. Declaring that according to Shariah [Islamic Law], women should enjoy the same rights as men in holding independent nationality documents and identification cards, Prince Ahmed said that nevertheless the current identification cards remain valid, and do not have to be replaced until the time due for their renewal.
