GCC Patent Office Opens In Riyadh

Speaking at the opening of the Patent Office of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in Riyadh yesterday, GCC Secretary-General Jamil Hujeilan referred to the unified system for patents as being in line with the fourth article of the GCC's charter which stipulates the importance of facilitating scientific and technological development in the fields of industry, mining, and agriculture. In this respect, intellectual property has become an indivisible part of global trade and a major aspect of the agreements of the World Trade Organization. The patent office will serve all citizens, concerned authorities, and companies in the member states, who are urged to register their ideas and innovations. The office operates under the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), which was established in 1974 as a specialized agency of the United Nations concerned with protection of intellectual property and encouragement of innovation.
