Arab Energy Ministers Meet in Cairo

Minister of Industry and Electricity Dr. Hashim Yamani is leading the Saudi delegation to the third conference of Arab energy ministers, which opened today in Cairo. Speaking at the inaugural session, he said practical steps had been taken to implement the power grid project among the member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) following its approval by the GCC leaders at their December 1997 meeting in Kuwait. He noted that the project will be carried out in three phases, the first covering linkage of the Kingdom's electricity grid with those of Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain; the second, linkage of Oman with the United Arab Emirates; and the third, joining these two grids. Dr. Yamani went on to express Saudi Arabia's happiness that the Kingdom is to be the headquarters of the project.
