Thirty-two earthquake monitoring stations are planned by the King Abdul Aziz City for
Science and Technology (KAACST) under the Saudi Arabian National Digital Seismographic
Network project. Seven of these will be in the Makkah area, to ensure the safety of the
pilgrims, and will be operated for KAACST by the King Abdul Aziz University in Jeddah. The
seismic stations will be operational some time next year, providing automated event
detection. It is to be noted, however, that the Kingdom is relatively safe in terms of
seismic activity when compared to certain other Arab countries.
