Addressing an international seminar at the Austrian Center for Peace Studies in Vienna,
Saudi Ambassador to the United Kingdom and Ireland Dr. Ghazi Algosaibi refuted opinions
that suggest conflict is likely to take place among the differing civilizations of the
world of today. The topic of the seminar was the future of global peace and security and
the role of culture in maintaining it. Ambassador Algosaibi attributed the disputes that
have recently taken place to political and economic reasons rather than cultural
considerations, and underscored the importance of awareness of co-existence for all
civilizations. He went on to say that the commonality among peoples is greater than their
diversity. Ambassador Algosaibi was the first Arab and the first Muslim personality to
address the seminar, which is held regularly by the Austrian Center for Peace Studies in
collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO). He is a candidate for the upcoming vacancy in the post of UNESCO’s
Director-General.
