The Riyadh Development Authority has reported that the population of the city of Riyadh is
now estimated to be 3.4 million, and is expected to reach 4.4 million by the year 2006. The
majority of the inhabitants are young. The average age is 22, with half of the population
under the age of 20, and only two percent over 60 years old. The population has grown over
the last ten years at an annual average rate of 8.1 percent, due to a high fertility rate
as well as urban migration. Riyadh is one of the fastest-growing cities in the world.
