Saudi Aramco reported today that one of its helicopters, carrying 20 people, had crashed
while taking off yesterday evening from the helipad at Abu Safa field heading for Ras
Tanura. Twelve Aramco employees were killed, including the pilot and his assistant. One of
the twelve was a British national, and the rest were Saudis. The eight rescued personnel,
seven Saudis and one Canadian, were flown to the Aramco Hospital in Dhahran. There is as
yet no report on the cause of the accident. Saudi Aramco Chairman Abdullah Saleh Jumah expressed the company's deep sorrow and grief
over this tragic accident, and extended condolences to the families of those killed.
