Kingdom reports 'ifta' ruling on civil marriage

The Kingdom's standing committee for religious research and rulings (ifta) has issued an edict on civil marriage in connection with a draft bill currently under discussion in Beirut.  The committee upholds the Higher Council for Islamic Shari'ah in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Council of Muftis in Lebanon in rejecting the proposed system of civil marriage, declaring it invalid because it violates Islamic Law, and bases the marriage contract on civil law, not on Shari'ah.  The committee warns Muslims against this law since it does not conform with Shari'ah rules pertaining to inheritance and consummation of marriage.
