Industrial research conference opens in Bahrain

Minister of Industry and Electricity Dr. Hashem Abdullah Yamani is leading the Saudi delegation to the Conference on Scientific Research and Technological Development that opened in Manama, Bahrain, today. The three-day conference will review a number of issues aimed at enhancing the role of practical research in the industrial sectors of the member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). In his keynote address, Minister Yamani presented a paper entitled "The Targeted Form of a System for Scientific Research and Technological Development in the GCC". He referred to the GCC states as characterized by the presence of abundant quantities of oil and natural gas, which has a decisive role in industry. He went on to highlight the importance of the competitive aspects of industry, including product quality, new inventions, and industrial improvements. He cited the high efficiency of energy consumption by high-tech machinery that has led to reduction in the demand for oil on the one hand, and on the other, replacement of metal by plastic products. He urged the establishment of effective industrial research and technological systems in the Arabian Gulf region to enable competitiveness in a comprehensive world economy.
