Director-General of the Saudi Center for Organ Transplants Dr. Faisal Abdel-Rahman reports that over four thousand cases of kidney failure are treated each year in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. There are 104 dialysis units, 80 of them operating under the supervision of the Ministry of Health, with 24 in other health systems. Since the center was established, some 2,200 transplant operations have been carried out with kidneys donated by relatives, and another 850 using kidneys from patients declared brain-dead. The center also publishes a specialized quarterly periodical which has a circulation of more than 6,000. It is the only one in its field in the region, and has earned a good reputation in the academic world.
