Ramadan message from King Fahd and Crown Prince Abdullah

On the occasion of the arrival of the Holy Month of Ramadan, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd Bin Abdul Aziz and Crown Prince Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz, Deputy Prime Minister and Commander of the National Guard, today issued the following speech:

“Brother citizens:

The Holy Month of Ramadan has arrived, which Almighty God has said is the month when there was sent down the Qur’an to guide mankind and to give clear signs for judging what is right and what is wrong, and during which everyone should fast.   The Prophet Muhammad declared that Ramadan is a blessed month and that fasting during it is a compulsory act, saying: ‘The doors of Paradise are open and the doors of Hell are closed during the Holy Month of Ramadan;  moreover, in this month there is one night that is better than a thousand months.’

As we are receiving and welcoming this Holy Month, we would like to greet all citizens, residents, visitors and all Muslims throughout the world, praying to Almighty God to help us all fast its days and pray its nights.   We also pray that all martyrs and all deceased be forgiven, whether from among our citizens or from the Muslim Nation.   In this blessed month we should look at ourselves and do our best to behave in the proper and  straight way to enable our fasting and our prayers to be accepted;  in so doing, prosperity, security and stability will be bestowed upon us.   We should continue in pious deeds in line with the verse of the Holy Qur’an that says:   ‘Ye who believe, bow down, prostrate yourselves, and adore your Lord, and do good, that ye may prosper.’

With the advent of this Holy Month we come to the end of a year full of developments.   In spite of some relaxation in Palestine and in Bosnia-Herzegovina, there are still some painful situations such as the continuation of disputes, among the factions in Somalia, and those in Afghanistan, and in Chechnya.   We have been following these events, and are aware of the ordeal of our brethren Muslims as the result of continuing war and tyranny.   We are hopeful that Ramadan will bring the healing of injury and the raising of the voice of right, peace, and justice.

If Muslims had meditated on the Holy Qur’an and followed its teachings and those of the Prophet and adhered to the Islamic creed in spirit as well as in letter, then the situation would not have deteriorated and Muslim ranks would not be divided.   The Holy Qur’an says:  ‘And hold fast, all together, by the rope which God stretches out for you, and be not divided among yourselves’ and again: ‘Obey God and His apostle, and fall into no disputes, lest ye lose heart and your power depart;  be patient and strong.’

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, its government and its people, honored to serve the Two Holy Mosques and the pilgrims to them, and ever mindful of enabling the guests of God perform their rituals in line with the teachings of the Holy Qur’an and the Sunna, will spare no effort in the service of Islam and Muslims throughout the world.

We pray to Almighty God that all our good goals be realized and that we are all enabled to fast the days and pray the nights of this generous and blessed month.”
