Minister of Agriculture and Water Dr. Abdullah Al-Muammar, speaking at a recent meeting with farmers at the Riyadh Chamber of Commerce, reported on the Ministry’s new policy.   This is for diversification of agricultural crops that do not require large quantities of water, and for cultivation of crops that can be irrigated using saline water.  

In the meantime, the agricultural sector has been contributing positively to meeting the Kingdom’s requirements of foodstuffs.   Dr. Al-Muammar said that Saudi Arabia has surpassed the stage of self-sufficiency and is now exporting the surplus, adding that imported food commodities dropped by 41 percent from 1984 to 1993, while exports of agricultural products increased twelve fold over the same period.
