Council of Ministers meeting

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd Bin Abdul Aziz, chairing the regular weekly meeting of the Council of Ministers yesterday, quoted the Holy Qur’an, saying:  “Let them adore the Lord, who provides them with food against hunger and security against fear of danger”.   The King recalled the early stages of the founding of the modern Kingdom by King Abdul Aziz whose strong belief, wisdom and farsightedness enabled him to establish a state on the basis of the Holy Qur’an and the Sunnah (the teachings of the Prophet).  As a result, security, stability and prosperity have prevailed in Saudi Arabia.

Information Minister Dr. Fouad Al-Farsi reported that King Fahd then referred to the strategic objectives of the Kingdom’s six development plans, implemented in accordance with Islamic beliefs, saying:  “Any desperate attempts or irrational behavior will make the Kingdom adhere more firmly to its obligations in the service of Islam, safeguarding national, regional and international acquisitions.”   The most important of these objectives is preservation of Islamic values and implementation of Islamic Sharia (Law), as well as defense of the region and of the Arab world, in addition to supporting the pillars of security and stability in the country.

Referring to the criminal explosion that took place in Al-Khobar last week, King Fahd stated that the condemnation of it by citizens at all levels has provided clear evidence of the existing cohesion between the people and their leadership, adding:  “God willing, the culprits will soon be detected and tried in accordance with the rules of the Almighty”.  He expressed his confidence that all Saudi citizens are working with the security forces, and also expressed appreciation for the sympathy shown to the Kingdom following the car bomb incident, by the leaders and presidents of various countries, as well as Muslim scholars, thinkers and intellectuals.

Reviewing the Kingdom’s role at Arab and Islamic levels, King Fahd expressed satisfaction at the decision of Russia to withdraw its troops from Chechnya effective Friday, and at the timetable with full withdrawal to take place by the end of August.

At the domestic level, the cabinet approved authorization of the Minister of the Interior or his deputy to sign the security cooperation agreement between the Saudi Ministry of the Interior and the Interior Ministry of France.   The cabinet also approved implementation of the resolution adopted by the Supreme Council of the GCC at its 16th meeting in Oman in December 1995, concerning the regulations governing retail practice by GCC citizens according to the stated formula, provided that Saudi partners in any corporate body comprise fifty percent.
