‘At Elevations of Art’, a book recently written by Fu’ad As’ad Kamakhi, is the first comprehensive study of its kind on the arts in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It sheds light on both theoretical and historical angles of the fine arts, which include drawing, portraiture, sculpture, literature, music, dance, and theater, and does so in a manner that is artistic, stemming from a moral and literary as well as a scientific perspective. The first half of the book tackles the issues and concepts of beauty, without being bound to a traditional historical style of presentation. The second half links the most important manifestations of artistic expression in Saudi Arabia with the trends discussed earlier. An appendix contains illustrations of some of the arts studied.
